How Communities In Schools of Palm Beach County Changed a Student’s Life.

After moving from place to place, Erven found support through Ms. Desilus and Communities In Schools of Palm Beach County program at Royal Palm Beach High School. Despite language barriers and educational disruptions, their three-year mentorship transformed his life. “She has been like family to me,” Erven says, crediting her guidance for his academic success and clear future plans. With her help navigating the educational system, applying for scholarships, and developing his natural mechanical talents, the once-uncertain student is now a confident graduating senior headed to technical college to pursue automotive technology. His goal is to open a mechanic shop serving his multilingual community, honoring his parents’ sacrifices while using his skills to create opportunities for others. “Education is the one thing nobody can take away from you,” reflects Erven, whose story exemplifies how “Being Present” can unlock potential in students facing extraordinary challenges.

By identifying individual barriers and establishing meaningful connections, our coaches deliver exactly the right resources at the perfect moment. Our evidence-based approach emphasizes five developmental relationships—support, care, challenge, shared power, and expanded possibilities. We work closely with school staff to track each student’s progress and foster an environment where graduation becomes a tangible goal and reality rather than a distant achievement.

Overcoming Obstacles

The path to graduation presents challenges: maintaining the required 2.0 GPA, mastering essential reading and math assessments, fulfilling community service requirements, developing concrete post-graduation plans, and much more. Yet time and again, our students exhibit remarkable resilience. With unwavering determination and the comprehensive support from the coaches at CIS of Palm Beach County, they shatter limitations and prove that every goal is within reach when the right support system is in place.
